Seminole 20, Sweetwater 14 (OT)

The Sweetwater Mustangs worked hard this week and it showed in this game. The Mustangs played a more seasoned Seminole team in their backyard, and still almost won the game forcing it to overtime, before Seminole intercepted a Mustang pass and the offense scored from the 1 yard line to win the game.

Once again, turnovers by the Mustangs was the key for the loss.

Seminole's Daniel Allen kept his team in the game in the first half when he intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown with 6:09 left in the first quarter.

But Coach Slaughter and the Mustangs got off the bus and were ready to play.

Sweetwater took the opening kickoff and set up shop at their own 42 yard line and the first play from scrimmage went all the way down to the Seminole 10 yard line. The Mustangs went in from the 3rd play from scrimmage to make it a quick 7-0.

In fact, Sweetwater did a great job the first half of play, Sweetwater had taken a 14-7 lead at halftime on scoring runs by A.J. McCoy (1 yard) and B.J. Walker (13 yards).

The lone touchdown for Seminole in the first half was an interception returned for a touchdown.

The second half had some great Mustang highlights as well. Seminole had gotten down to the Mustang 32 yard line, and two quarterback sacks by the mustang defense made Seminole have to punt from around midfield which was huge for the Mustang defense.

It appeared from there that the Mustangs just ran out of gas, as the bigger offensive line just kept pushing the defense back on it's heels, and the missed tackles began entering the game. That's the danger of having many two-way starters on the field like that. You just get tired.

The bottom line is the game went to overtime and Seminole won.

So what now? Keep believing!

The team did a great job, pure and simple. Sure, if we were still running the wishbone we may have won the game. So what? We would have made the playoffs and been eliminated in the first round. But I believe Coach Slaughter is getting this ship turned around and we are headed for better seas.

In Coach Slaughter's words, "When I was getting interviewed for this job, I was asked about my offensive philosphy and the things I like to do," Slaughter said. "So they knew what they were hiring and that they weren't getting the wishbone.

"I'm still a grind-it-out type guy, for the most part, and I'm a physical football coach. But we think that by being a little more balanced, it will help us in some of those games where (Sweetwater) has struggled to score."

And isn't that what we Mustang fans been wanting to hear for a number of years?
Let's give this team all of our support and know they are working on getting this team ready for district play. There are some tough games ahead, and we are going to need everyone's (fans included) attitude to be positive and full of pride for the Big Red.

It's Sweetwater traveling to Seminole this week...

So we sort of missed the boat against Burkburnet.....

Let's move on...

If another team thinks you fumble a lot, they will hit you harder...the thinking is they think they can make you fumble again...

The Mustangs will do a better job of hanging on to the ball this week. Seminole is a veteran team. They have a lot of seniors...they will probably stack the box..

We can beat this team, we just need to hang on to the ball, and sustain some drives.

Hello 2009 Mustangs!

Hello to this year's addition of the Sweetwater Mustangs!

It seems like it's been forever since football season, and now it's back to the football field for this year's edition of Mustang football!

A lot has happened since last year, and let me just say a huge welcome to Coach Slaughter and family. It's great to have a coach to carry on the tradition of mustang football, and i just know this is going to be a successful eandevor for the Stangs.

I just wanted to say we are so honored to have such dedication in our coaches and players. It's going to be a great year for the Mustangs!

I was going through some old entries from this blog, and I found an entry that I think is relevent . This is entitled 51 Steps, and it sort of speaks of the tradition of mustang football, and written by Coach David Mayes. I thought it fit for the new coaches. So here we go:

Dear Clyde.....

Congrats on your victory over the Sweetwater Mustangs Friday night.

Your team played very well, and more importantly, with alot of class. I think we all knew going in that this game was going to be a war, and it was.

I would like to point out that in your game with Wylie, you got robbed one that one call where the Wylie player fumbled before going into the end zone..That should not have been a touchdown.

But guess what? Football karma has a way of returning the favor. Now please don't think we are taking anything away from your victory, but watch this clip, and you decide if this was a mistake called by the officials that gave Clyde the ball, and consequesntly, the go ahead touchdown.

Thanks mucho to Kevin Wright for the great video.

Hopefully, we will get to see ya'll again in the playoffs. Perhaps then, the football karma will be on our side then.
